Chhangte’s Hat-Trick Fires Mohun Bagan to Emphatic 6-0 Win in IFA Shield Opener

Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant opened their IFA Shield 2026 campaign in ruthless fashion, dismantling Sreenidi Deccan 6-0 on a rain-affected afternoon at their home ground. Lallianzuala Chhangte’s clinical hat-trick and an overall display of attacking fluency.

The 126th edition of the IFA Shield began on 23 September with six teams split into two groups. Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United and Sreenidi Deccan formed one group, while East Bengal, Calcutta Customs and Punjab FC made up the other. Mohammedan SC had withdrawn in protest over refereeing decisions in the recent Calcutta Football League final, paving the way for Calcutta Customs to take their place.

Mohun Bagan arrived as defending champions and fresh CFL winners. Several first-team regulars — including Sahal Abdul Samad, Lalengmawia Ralte and Manvir Singh — were away on national team duty, yet head coach Panos fielded a strong side packed with attacking intent

The Mariners needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock. Dejan Drazic’s intelligent work created space for Abhishek Suryavanshi, who finished calmly to make it 1-0.

Mohun Bagan dominated possession and territory on a slippery surface. Sreenidi Deccan, competing in the Indian Football League, struggled to contain the home side’s movement. Just before the interval, Chhangte produced a composed finish from a Miguel Figueira delivery to double the lead in the 44th minute. The half-time scoreline read 2-0, and the CFL trophy was formally presented to the Mohun Bagan squad during the break — a fitting recognition of their recent domestic success.

Any hopes Sreenidi had of a recovery evaporated within the opening 12 minutes of the second half. Chhangte completed his hat-trick with two rapid strikes in the 52nd and 57th minutes, both showcasing his movement, timing and finishing quality. The India international was unplayable, switching flanks effectively and constantly finding pockets of space.

With the game effectively decided, Mohun Bagan continued to press. Substitute Sandeep Malik, a key contributor in the CFL triumph, made it 5-0 in the 80th minute. Two minutes later, Chhangte turned provider, delivering a precise cross that Lee Erwin headed home for his first goal in green-and-maroon colours. The final score: 6-0.

The result puts Mohun Bagan on three points and a +6 goal difference at the top of their group after one match. Sreenidi Deccan sit bottom with a difficult task ahead against NorthEast United on 26 September. Mohun Bagan will face the Highlanders on 29 September, also at home.

This was more than just a comfortable victory. It was a demonstration of squad depth, attacking fluency and the ability to perform without several key internationals. Chhangte’s hat-trick will boost confidence across the dressing room, while Erwin’s goal on debut adds another dimension to the forward line.
